Before Disney's Gargoyles - Flight of the Helgon - A Journeyman Artist Timeline Tale

Long before I was co-producer/director on Disney TV's Gargoyles, the animated series, I created the Helgon, an original character I used for promo art in my freelance career, and my own original fantasy/adventure story. Here's collection of my Helgon sketches and art. Enjoy.

Nemesis: Retaliation is a 1-5 player semi co-op horror Sci-Fi thematic Board Game created by Adam Kwapiński and published by Awaken Realms. It is the final, epic part of the Nemesis trilogy of games. In Retaliation, you and your friends are facing an onslaught of an alien HORDE! I'm a sucker for sci-fi battlesuits, so the game figures and art hooked me. So I supported this on Kickstarter, and c...
Here Comes the Band TV Record Spot - 1976

I found an old VHS tape with copies of my TV record spots from the 1970's and this "Here Comes the Band " spot was on it. This was produced by Wingstar Production, an indie film production company, in New York City. I did freelance animation art and direction for. This, and the TV record spots, may have been my first animation jobs. Sorry, the image quality isn't the best. We all have to start ...

This sequence from 2nd season Episode, "First Step", from the storyboard panels featured in the slideshow. My first attempt at post a video was block for copyright issues. The blocking can be hit or miss. But, with the advance in AI, it seems to be getting worst. Music was the main reason for problems, now AI is tagging visuals more, too. It’s a real slap in the face when you help create the so...

Thats super cool! I might have to look into the 4th one, liked the comic panels in there.
I'd love to buy this as a poster
me too!
Most excellent! Thanks for the video, friend.
Which cube is this ?? Pleeeeaaasssee
It's Intrism Mini cube available at intrism.com/
I just love it!!!
He looks awesome! Can definitely see how it translated over to Gargoyles!
Just recently cleaned my one up which had been hidden away for years. Danm mans kinda cursed tbh my poor mother didn't know what she was getting herself into buying my this lol
Do you still have the drawing of CHEETAH MAN
When i tell people my brother draw some of the CLASSIC ANIMATION SHOWS OF THE 80'S TO THE 2000'S THEN NAME THEM THEY SAY YOU ARE A LIVING LEGEND I NO HE'S JUST MY BROTHER
Thanks, Khasim. I'm glad you enjoy.
I remember that drawing as a kid Dennis . Love Big BRO❤️❤️❤️
My father wrote the copy for the commercial, and he gave me the record. 40 years later and I still know every word to the songs. 😂
I really like the S.I.M.O.N. idea and it acting like the blind star trooper's eyes! Did you have it worked out if S.I.M.O.N. would have a personality similar to other systems like Jarvis or Cortana?
Thanks for the comment. I envisioned S.I.M.O.N. like a floating droid in Star War. The story was intended to be illustrated in a comic book. I planned all the action to SIMON's POV with video scan line effects. I think of presenting my undeveloped idea outlines in Trashcan comics with the text and spot illustrations. More items for Dime-A-Dime Projects posts. Stay tuned. Thanks, again.
Thanks for sharing, this is historic.
I have this album - I never knew there was a commercial for it, or any Haley release. Thanks for sharing!
Good work Lord God
Any heroes in here? Great work DJW!!
Anansi was always wise and those drums can be very heavy indeed!
This is an excellent presentation, it opens a door through time and space!
I can’t tell how much I love the Thundercats tv show. It literally changed my life for the better. I’m now a writer because of the show
Thank you for viewing. The statements like yours means the world to creatives like myself. It's humbling to think our effort to use our talents to entertain (and make a living), might inspire others to become the Jack Kirby (my main inspiration) or Stan Lee of the future. Good luck in your future projects, and remember to enjoy the journey, where ever it leads you. All the best.
@@DennisWoodyard-DragonflyEnt thank you and I appreciate the motivation. Keep up the good work
Its so cool that you're doing these vids! Its a great insight to what inspired certain ideas.
Thank you, Ladykay. Glad you like them. More to come, for my other shows. :)
I miss this show. Dammit...
How to get an MP3 version?
Wow, that intro really drags on...
These are soooo cool! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing this stuff!! I'm a life long fan of Thundercats. It has been my favorite since, LITERALLY, I can remember. Please know that any stuff you can share is much appreciated! And thanks again!!
🤘 Promo'SM
Half of this terrible show is theme music!! Thanks though for sharing this. I never knew this existed!
Wow you worked on a majority of my childhood favorites. Glad to have you on RUclips to hear some of the great classics
Thanks for viewing. Enjoy.
Such an underrated show. This boards are great! So expressive!
New sub! I got your business card from my guy Sebastian that helped you out at Millennium Games today, you made his and mine's day! I grew up on Thundercats and Gargoyles and to be able to see your other work and hear you talk on it is a great honor! Looking forward to going through your lovely channel. Mine is still pretty young and a work in progress, yours is a great thing to aspire to!
Thanks for visiting my channel. Sebastian mentioned you were a big Gargoyle fan. We get so wrapped in my purchase, I didn't realize we forgot to take a picture of the animation cel, I brought with me to match paint colors to. So, I went back in the store for Sebastian to take the pic. I didn't to disappoint a fan, and I figure he could have landed in the dog for not getting the pic. :) Again, thanks for viewing and subscribing. I took quick at your channel, and I'll be subscribing. You've got me beat on digital art by miles. Keep up the good work. All the best.
@@DennisWoodyard-DragonflyEnt Thank you so much for your kind words, you honor me. I still have quite a bit to learn, but hearing that helps me know that I'm on the right track. The cells were quite breathtaking, don't get to see too much of those these days. Really made my day :) I'll have to try and draw Goliath and the gang again for a Fan Art Friday vid here soon, other attempts in the past have been lackluster lol.
subbed! the concrete video got me to do so
Thanks for subscribing. I wish I could have done more with Concrete. I met Paul Chadwick and he was very supportive. Thanks, again.
i got nothing sums it up pretty well i think. i will say that theme song got over played VERY fast. but thank you for sharing this really interesting piece of history that i never knew about. i would have been 16 that year.
Thanks for viewing. Truth be told, we suspected the show was doomed while we were doing it. Mainly, the west coast WB execs wanted nothing to do with Rankin/Bass as a production company. There was an East Coast/West Coast gulf, that could not be bridged. Thanks, again, for viewing.
I'd watch a whole movie made out of this. That was good art.
Just bought it... Damn it's expensive.... 🤘🏼😁
I just got into listening to Ruby recently; in fact, I'm listening to Ruby 4 as I type this. I love the sketches; I think you've got Ruby down perfectly. The art style reminds me a little of the first Heavy Metal movie. Great stuff! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for viewing. All the best.
INCREDIBLE!! Thank you so much for this historical upload!! What beautiful, dynamic artwork you all made together! Mesmerizing!
Nice job Dennis! Keep rocking the creativity. I like your friend's music too. They should do a channel and post their work.
Thanks. Llyn. I'm encouraging them to set up a channel. Keep your post coming, too. All the best.
It's really well done. Such a beautiful book. Still, I wonder why it exists. It just seems to odd.
Cool! I loved the Concrete short & the fact that you gave it to Paul Chadwick. And you had an Amiga! I had always wanted one but was too expensive at the time.
Thanks for viewing. The Amiga at the time was much cheaper than the other color option, the Macintoch II. Plus, the video transfer card I used was just $95. I sometimes wish I was more tech minded, as I was experimenting with early digital animation. Thanks, again for viewing.
These are amazing!
🌺 'PromoSM'
More! More! More! Dang I miss stuff like this! Real Storyboards that don't have to be animated! Great stuff Dennis! I like the format you are using too! I so love to see other people's board work! (Suggestion - next time put 'Storyboard' first in your title for the search engines, and don't forget to add # hashtags when you post. You have to hit the sentence that says "see more" at the bottom of the first information page in order to add tags - for some reason RUclips seems to intentionally hide it ). Bravo!
I thought maybe I hadn’t worked on this episode, because I didn’t see my name under “Animation Timing” -and more importantly - I didn’t retain any muscle memory of having heard the track or written on the sheets , but then I saw my name under “Timing Supervisor” - so I must have done SOMETHING on this one.❤
Sometimes they just give you credit on all the shows. I love seeing on IMDB that I worked on 47 episodes of something.
LOL. Thanks, Jeffery. I had the opposite happen. I didn't know I wasn't in the credits for Strephfinger until I did this video, even if it was only for clean up and revisions. Merlin and the Dragons is on my lists of shows to do, which will include a gallery with your background art. Stay tuned.
That's unique and rare!
I think the wooden puzzles are amazing. I plan to build their largest one, soon and customize it with my art, like a resume. The spaceship rubber stamps are a real mystery. They don't show up on online, at all. I'm thinking of using them to make flipbooks, notebooks or other items. Thanks, for commenting.
Too Cool Dennis!!! Thanks for posting that. Nice combo of computer and traditional animation. Love the flip book - do you have a site where we can buy them? Consider putting contact information in you video description.
Thanks, Llyn. My Dragonfly Flipz Books are a dormant project I hope to revisit soon.

It's great to see this promo art from that awesome series. Thank you so much Mr. Woodyard. I see a little of Doc's moustache in yours.
capcom needs to create another melee (white weapon) fighting game like style star gladiator but with graphics like street fighter alpha or even 3 strike, maybe the characters could brown tam bronze skin man yellow eyes black hair man like bosch of sf 6 the clothing could be similar like an overcoat lying on one side the weapon urumi kusarigama chain scyther chain whip, naginata haladie weapon white hair blue and yellow eyes girl valkirye style, one bun hair blue clothing color samurai man, one knife dagger ninja man, one hand fan horse tail woman, , tonfa girl and boomerang soldier man, one moskeete reed mage clothing and cape or overcoat and hat man, one street man self-taught samurai, one arabe and or chinese swordsman, one axe big or and fat man, 12 one two sword man, one mercenary assassin long sword samurai ,one girl with dagger or whell blade ring, one warrior, one master long sword and cape and one bayonet out of law soldier police man agent totaling 18characters from one first version, i think coud be amazing. nice intro and game thiago da silva lisboa from brazil brazilian!
